The new station was built on the Hochschneeberg, 1,800 m above sea level, directly adjacent to the Berghouse. A celebration to mark the opening took place on the 17th July 2009.

Discover how the cog railway and the mountain became one. A lot of hard work was necessary to enable the train to climb the mountain. At no point was the harmony between nature and technology compromised. Read more about the origins of the railway below.

Lush meadows,  the scent of coniferous forests and the magnificent panoramic view of our mountain scenery pass you by as the tour continues at a leisurely pace. When alighting from the train at the highest-situated station in Austria (1,800m above sea level) you will be impressed by the performance of this little train which will have climbed 1218 metres on the 9.8 km journey.

Empress Elisabeth was murdered on the shores of Lake Geneva in 1898. The Elisabeth Church, built in her memory in 1901, is situated close to the mountain cog railway station. |
