Due to the harsh winter, work on the railway did not start until the spring of 1896. It was extremely laborious. The many workers who came from all corners of the monarchy had very few technical aids at their disposal. The transporting of materials had to be done using mules and teams of oxen.
Barracks and stables were set up on the outskirts of Puchberg to accommodate the workers and animals.
By the autumn of 1896 the foundations and the tunnel opening were in place. By the 1st June 1897 the first scheduled steam train had already made its first journey to the station at Baumgartner. At the same time work was continuing apace on the upper section of the track, and on the 22nd September 1897 the entire track was opened to traffic.
A technological masterpiece had been created. |
