A chronology of the Schneebergbahn

1872 - 1895

1872- First plans made for the construction of a cog railway on the Schneeberg

1885- Engineer Josef Tauber receives a preliminary permission for a "locomotive railway" from Wiener Neustadt to Puchberg am Schneeberg

4th Nov 1895- Engineer Leo Arnoldi's railway construction and operations company is commissioned to build the Schneebergbahn


1895 - 1897


9th December 1895- Ground-breaking ceremony for the Puchberg am Schneeberg railway station.

15th April 1897- Opening of the standard gauged adhesion traction railway from Wiener Neustadt to Puchberg


1897 - 1898


1st June 1897- Opening of the first section of the cog railway line from Puchberg to Baumgartner

25th September 1897- Opening of the second section of the cog railway line from Baumgartner to Hochschneeberg

28th June 1898- Opening of the hotel at Hochschneeberg, built by the Viennese architect Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer who are also known as the architects of the Vienna Ringstrasse


1899 - 1937


1st January 1899- the Vienna - Aspang Rail Company (EWA) takes possession of all assets as well as the operational management of the Schneebergbahn. The principal shareholders in EWA were the Société Belge de Chemins de Fer, Brussels

18th June 1902- Emperor Franz Joseph I takes a trip on Schneebergbahn and visits the Elisabeth church and the hotel

1st July 1937 - Takeover of the operation by the BBÖ (Austrian Federal Railways), however the assets remain in the possession of the EWA

1938- Takeover by the German State Railway

1st January 1940- Nationalisation by the German State Minister for Transport, and assimilation of the Schneebergbahn into the State Railway asset without compensation to the shareholders


1945 - 1996


1945 - 1947- The Austrian State Railways continue to operate the Schneebergbahn

1947 - 1996- Operation of the Schneebergbahn by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB)
