Details for: Hike to Damböckhaus and Fischerhütte

Brief description

The hike over the Hochschneeberg to the Damböckhaus and the Fischerhütte can be done on foot from Puchberg or combined with a ride on the Schneebergbahn.

Description

The mountain is calling! The highest mountain in Lower Austria, the Schneeberg. The Fischerhütte is located near the summit, the Klosterwappen at 2076m. The ideal starting point for our tour to the hut is Puchberg am Schneeberg, from where you can comfortably take the Schneebergbahn to the Hochschneeberg, where a great view awaits us and right next to the summit station is the Elisabethkircherl. A beautiful hiking trail also leads along the cog railroad - past rustic huts at the stops, such as the Hengsthut or the "Buchtlhütte" Baumgartner stop. If you want to take your time, you won't regret walking this trail. It's not far from the summit station. Passing the"Kinderbergwelt" you come to the Damböckhaus. Here you can fortify yourself with a lentil stew with smoked meat. The route then continues to the Fischerhütte. The view from the highest hut in Lower Austria is indescribable - you have to see it!

More experienced mountain hikers can also reach the Fischerhütte and the Damböckhaus via the Fadensteig or Nandlgrat as well as through the Weichtalklamm gorge from the Höllental valley. If you take the Schneebergbahn cable car up the Schneeberg, you will pass the popular huts on the following hikes: Paradise of Scenic Views hike or Hochschneeberg plateau hike. Both huts are also on the trail along the Wiener Alpenbogen - Arc of the Viennese Alps (trail ) on the Knofeleben-Edelweißhütte stage.

Route description Hike to Damböckhaus and Fischerhütte

From Puchberg am Schneeberg station, we start through the town along the cog railway track. The path along the tracks leads us through the districts of Muthenhof and Hengsttal. Over the Hauslitzsattel, we pass by a refreshment stop, the Hengsthütte. After the Hengsthütte, we keep left and go through the high forest. We reach a large alpine meadow with the Ternitzerhütte. After the Ternitzerhütte, we turn right and return to the cog railway tracks. Above the tracks lies the Adolf Kögler House with the Dragon Walls in the background. The hike continues along the railway over the Kaltwassersattel to Baumgartner Station. In the next section, we reach the tree line. We continue through dwarf pine fields and cross the cog railway track. The path leads us through extensive dwarf pine fields to the Empress Elisabeth Memorial Church, the so-called Elisabeth Kircherl, at the Hochschneeberg mountain station. Here a break is possible at the Berghaus Hochschneeberg. We now follow the hiking trail towards the Damböckhaus. From this hut, it is about 2 km to reach our destination, the Fischerhütte. Those who want to shorten the route can take the Schneebergbahn up and start the plateau hike from there.
